"Waterfall"

"The Leaf"

This is the first stage of a quilt that I am doing for a challenge in Quilting Arts Magazine. The  challenge is called "What's in a Name" and involves creating a quilt with the title of any of the following phrases:

  • The eye of the storm
  • A leap of faith
  • Seeing is believing
  • The devil is in the details

The only thing I will tell you at this time is that the name of my quilt is "Seeing is Believing".

I was able to get the border added this weekend. I didn't use the traditional method for mitering corners but it looks great anyway.

Here is the finished quilt. It represents what someone would see should they be standing behind Mother Nature as she looks in the mirror. A special thanks to hobbledehoy at Etsy for the handspun yarn that I used for her hair.

Waterfall

I have wanted to make a waterfall quilt for quite some time now. I think the Willie K. song has something to with it. I managed to get this picture taken before the cat knocked over my portable design wall and instantly created a jig saw puzzle out of my picture pieces (and believe me there are quite a few pieces). I felt that the piece was going to be good enough that I took the hour or so that was needed and put the "puzzle" back together. It no longer sits on my design board where I can see it but in a pizza box where she can't get to it.

Finished!

The Leaf

I am starting another challenge quilt; and this one will be a "real" quilt since it is being entered in the local quilt show this September. The challenge theme is "Trees and/or parts of trees" A leaf counts doesn't it??? When we moved back here in October; just in time to rake leaves, I started saving a few that I liked the shape of.

Here is a picture of the one that I finally settled on for this project.

Once I had my leaf chosen it was time to make a detailed drawing. I used the grid method with a 1:5 ratio.

This is what a 25" leaf looks like on paper. I used this drawing to create my templates and also for the placement of each piece. I decided that my leaf would be floating on water and had just enough (and I mean just enough) of a fabric that I picked up in Hawaii right before we moved. It is really the back of the fabric... the front had this gold paint drizzled all over it. You can see just enough of the gold through the fabric that it would remind you of the sun reflecting off the water.
